Advocacy

The Scarborough CFUW advocacy group focus is on achievable goals within priorities identified by our membership including issues of eldercare, of poverty and housing, of gender-based violence and of early learning and childcare. Our goal is to enhance knowledge of these issues within our club and within the larger community. We raise awareness via social media. including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and participate annually in the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence.

  • We coordinate speakers to address the club members on important advocacy issues. Additionally, we encourage members to participate in the CFUW Speakers’ Series and presentations by other CFUW clubs and the provincial and national organizations.

  • We write letters/emails on behalf of CFUW Scarborough to Scarborough MPs, MPPs, and city Councillors about advocacy issues and follow up with meetings with our political representatives. We also circulate petitions for signature among club members on actionable issues.

  • We support advocacy initiatives highlighted each year by CFUW National and the Ontario council and liaise with other women’s organizations i.e., YWCA, Canadian Woman’s Foundation.

  • Our club reviews and discusses all proposed resolutions, which if agreed to, become CFUW policy, and provide an Action Plan for all CFUW clubs.

"Resolutions are important. They are the means through which group thinking is crystallized into policies and aims which demand expression in appropriate action. In the long run, the success of a resolution is gauged by the degree to which the substance of it is implemented. Sometimes this requires patience and persistence over a long period of time with numerous submissions to responsible authorities."

Former CFUW President, 1969
