Advocacy

CFUW Scarborough’s Advocacy standing committee engages in advocacy initiatives relevant to Scarborough and the wider community.

Our three advocacy streams are:

Community Outreach – working with Scarborough organizations on initiatives relevant to our community.

  • These organizations include Julliette's Place (Homeward Family Shelter), Scarborough Women’s Centre, Bluffs Food Bank, Thunder Woman Healing Lodge, and Agincourt Community Services Association.

  • Our club provides financial donations to Julliette's Place and Scarborough Women's Centre, food donations and money to Bluffs Food Bank, and funds educational scholarships at University of Toronto Scarborough  and Centennial College.

Communications to our Members on Advocacy Issues:

  • Encouraging club members to attend the CFUW Ontario Speakers Series and presentations by other CFUW clubs and organizations.

  • Enhancing members' knowledge of advocacy issues through advocacy moments and arranging speakers on advocacy issues for our club's general meetings.

Advocating to Government and Beyond:

  • Writing advocacy letters and emails to Scarborough MPs, MPPs and city councillors on advocacy issues and following up with meetings with political representatives on advocacy matter.

  • Writing advocacy letters on behalf of CFUW Scarborough on issues such as the effective implementation of Ontario's Early Learning and Child Care Program, Homelessness and the Housing FirstInitiative, Intimate Partner and gender violence, and Violence Against Women In Politics

  • Supporting advocacy initiatives highlighted each year by CFUW National and Ontario Council, and organizations with common priorities, e.g., the Canadian Women's Foundation, the YWCA.

We invite you to join our Advocacy group and work together to take action on advocacy issues. Women working together can make a difference!
